Slow Jam Saturday: The Stylistics, “When You’ve Got Love, It’s Christmas All Year Long”

Often, when an artist releases a holiday album, it typically features the usual songs.  However, if the singer has a capable voice, they can put their own unique spin on the material.  That’s precisely what The Stylistics did with their 1992 Christmas album, “Stylistics Christmas.” For this week’s Slow Jam Saturday, I wanted to highlight one of the originals from that project.

The song is “When You’ve Got Love, It’s Christmas All Year Long,” one of those deep-cut holiday joints that reminds you why The Stylistics occupied a rare lane in early-’90s soul.  By 1992, the group—Russell Thompkins Jr.’s unmistakable falsetto out front, supported by Herb Murrell, Airrion Love, and new addition Van Fields—was carrying the legacy of Philly elegance into a new era.

The strength of the song lies in what The Stylistics have always excelled at: harmony, warmth, and emotional intimacy.  Thompkins’ falsetto—still pristine, still cutting through a mix like a laser made of velvet—gives the track its center.  Murrell, Love, and Fields lock in around him, building a harmonic bed that feels less like a Christmas record and more like the quiet storm at 2 a.m.

The arrangement emphasizes softness with gentle keys, light percussion, and a melody designed for slow swaying.  It doesn’t attempt to compete with the grandiosity of big-band holiday productions; instead, it subtly invites you into the season.  Lyrically, the song conveys a simple, almost universal idea: if the relationship is right, every day feels like a little bit of Christmas.  The sentiment leans earnest rather than profound, but that’s part of its charm.  The Stylistics weren’t aiming for theological depth—they were crafting a mood, and it’s tender.

Where the track stumbles is its placement, sitting inside an album stacked with sacred standards, the shift from “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” to a contemporary soul ballad can feel abrupt.  Its thematic simplicity also stops it from reaching the emotional resonance of their earlier classics.  This isn’t “Betcha by Golly Wow”; it’s a smaller, gentler expression.

Still, for listeners who appreciate The Stylistics’ ability to make romance feel effortless, the song is a quiet highlight.  It may not be a holiday staple, but it’s a reminder that love—sung by the right voices—can make even December feel like spring.

‘Dead Man’s Wire’ turns a true-crime nightmare into a crowd-pleaser

On the morning of February 8, 1977, Tony Kiritsis walked into a mortgage office in Indianapolis convinced the system had finally turned on him. What followed was one of the most unsettling media spectacles of the decade: a 63-hour hostage standoff in which Kiritsis literally wired a sawed-off shotgun to both his victim’s neck and his own chest. It was desperation theater, broadcast live, raw and ugly, and fueled by a man who believed grievance was the same thing as righteousness.

Second Listen Sunday: Eric Benét, “It’s Christmas”

Eric Benét’s holiday album, “It’s Christmas”, finds the four-time Grammy nominee embracing comfort rather than challenge. He delivers a collection that is impeccably sung and tastefully arranged, though it ultimately feels a bit too cautious for an artist of his talent and history.
