For this week’s Slow Jam Saturday, I want to venture back to 1992 and give some love to PM’s Dawn “I’d Die Without You”. Initially appearing as the third single from the classic soundtrack to “Boomerang”. Written and produced by the group, with Prince Be taking the lead vocal.
“I’d Die Without You” by P.M. Dawn is a love song where Prince Be is overwhelmed by the intensity of his feelings for his woman. He is terrified to lose the other person in their life as they come to terms with the importance of that person to them. The first verse is about the group’s desperate need to be reunited with their lover. They cannot sleep, and they dream of their lover.
The pre-chorus and chorus articulate the profound affection the protagonist has for the woman to whom he is singing, emphasizing his willingness to do anything for her. The chorus recurs throughout the composition, serving as an anthem dedicated to this significant individual. In the second verse, the speaker conveys an apology for prior transgressions.
The effectiveness of the song is further enhanced by its connection to the accompanying film, as the primary character, Marcus, grapples with the realization of Angela’s importance in his life. The bridge illustrates that the other individual has become an essential part of the speaker’s existence, asserting that he cannot envision a life without his beloved.
While PM Dawn never reached the heights of their earlier songs with their later offerings, “I’d Die Without You” is a better song than some artists’ music today.
