Catching Up With Glenn Jones

Reviews & Dunn had a chance to chop it up, with iconic balladeer Glenn Jones, before his City Winery concert on Friday, February 21st.  I’ve been a fan of Glenn for years, so check out our interview below.

Reviews & Dunn – You got your start in Gospel music before linking up with Norman Connors’s way back in 1980 for the legendary song “Melancholy Fire.” What can you recall about the success of that record?

Glenn Jones – I can remember being nervous, anxious, and excited.

Reviews & Dunn – Growing up as an eighties baby, my mom would play your music around the house, and she’s the reason that I have such an appreciation for real harmony and singing. Who were some of your favorite artists growing up

Glenn Jones – Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, The Temptations, and Bobby’ The Poet’ Womack

Reviews & Dunn – One of my favorite features that you’ve done is “I Wanna Love You” with Kim Waters. Brutha, you sang the mess out of that one! I take it that you enjoy working with jazz artists. Do you play any instruments?

Glenn Jones – I play the guitar.

Reviews & Dunn – In addition to Regina Belle, Kim Waters, and Nick Colionne, I understand that you’re working with the renowned Chuckii Booker on your new album. How was the experience with Mr. Booker in the studio?

Glenn Jones – I’ve always admired Chuckii when we connected to work on my latest project; Chuckii shared that he and his mom have always been fans of mine. Chuckii is such a fantastic talent, and it was a great honor to collaborate with him.

Reviews & Dunn – Between “We’ve Only Just Begun (The Romance Is Not Over)” and “Here I Go Again,” which would you say is your signature song?

Glenn Jones – “We’ve Only Just Begun.”

Reviews & Dunn – Are there any newer artists that you would like to work with?

Glenn Jones – I would LOVE to work with Lalah Hathaway, Fantasia, and Faith Evans.

Reviews & Dunn – One of the things that irk me in today’s R&B is the omission of runs and bridges. What’s the one thing you would say is missing with this generation’s crop of R&B singers?

Glenn Jones – The delivery of the storyline and melody sometimes to me gets lost because of all the riffs and vocal gymnastics, the essence of the line can get lost.

Reviews & Dunn – If you were to headline a ladies only tour, similar to what Teddy Pendergrass did back in the seventies, who would you pick as your opening acts or touring partners

Glenn Jones – Joe, Musiq Soulchild, Dave Hollister, and Eric Roberson.

Is there any song in your discography, which you would’ve loved to see released as a single? “

Glenn Jones – At Last,”In You,” and “Give Love A Chance.”

Reviews & Dunn – What are your plans for 2020 musically?

Glenn Jones – Release my new project Love By Design, and travel to many parts of the world performing my classics and new music material.

Reviews & Dunn – Do you ever plan on doing any more acting?

Glenn Jones -If the right opportunity presents itself.

Reviews & Dunn – Who would you pick to portray you in a biopic?

Glenn Jones – Johnny Gill.

Reviews & Dunn -Is there anything you would like to add?

Glenn Jones – I thank God for longevity

Street Dreaming With Author Justin Jones

Hip Hop Head and author Justin Jones is currently in the final writing stages of his second book ‘Hip Hop Was Dead: The State of the Culture 2003-2007’. That book covers a 5-year era of Hip-Hop and how the culture was affected during that period. Mr. Jones took some time out, though, to chat with me about his debut book Street Dreaming: Reading Nas’ It Was Written.
