Slow Jam Saturday : Freddie Jackson, “Have Your Ever Loved Somebody”

Growing up in the eighties, I was surrounded by incredibly talented male R&B singers who could deliver unforgettable love songs.  Artists like Luther Vandross, Jeffrey Osborne, and Peabo Bryson dominated the airwaves, but Freddie Jackson was another voice that truly deserved recognition.

For this week’s edition of Slow Jam Saturday, I’m revisiting one of my personal favorites from his catalog: the 1986 classic “Have You Ever Loved Somebody.” This song appears on Jackson’s sophomore album, “Just Like the First Time”.

Barry Eastmond and Jolyon Skinner wrote it, with Eastmond also handling production.  “Have You Ever Loved Somebody” became another number-one hit on the Billboard R&B chart, further solidifying Jackson’s status as one of the premier voices in romantic soul music.

While many fans gravitate toward “Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times’ Sake)” or “You Are My Lady” when discussing Jackson’s signature songs, I’ve always believed “Have You Ever Loved Somebody” deserves equal recognition.

The song’s beauty lies in its simplicity.  Jackson doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel or overwhelm listeners with unnecessary vocal theatrics.  Instead, he speaks directly to someone who has experienced heartbreak and may be hesitant to embrace love again.  His approach is confident without being arrogant, and his sincere delivery makes the message resonate.

Musically, the production perfectly captures the essence of vintage eighties R&B.  The keyboards, steady groove, and polished arrangements complement Jackson’s smooth tenor without overshadowing it.  Barry Eastmond provides a solid musical foundation, allowing Jackson to showcase the vocal control and emotional conviction that made him a household name.

One aspect I’ve always appreciated about Freddie Jackson is that he never forced his performances.  Whether he was singing about heartbreak, romance, or the possibility of finding love again, his voice carried a natural elegance.  He understood that sometimes the best way to connect with listeners is to sing the song and let the emotion do the heavy lifting.

Forty years later, “Have You Ever Loved Somebody” still sounds as inviting as it did when it was released. It’s the kind of record that transports me back to an era when R&B singers weren’t afraid of vulnerability, and a well-written love song could convey more in four minutes than some artists manage across an entire album.

Freddie Jackson’s contributions to R&B deserve to be celebrated, and this particular song remains one of the strongest examples of his talent.  For this week’s Slow Jam Saturday, I’m giving flowers to an artist whose music has truly stood the test of time.

Sometimes, you don’t need an elaborate production or a complicated message.  All you need is a great melody, heartfelt lyrics, and a singer who knows how to deliver them.  Freddie Jackson had all of this and more.
