Kicking off my first interview is DMV based rapper K-Quick
Nineties babies are buzzing with excitement as two of the most prominent voices from that era, Brandy and Monica, prepare to launch “The Boy Is Mine Tour” next week. However, for this week’s Slow Jam Saturday, I wanted to highlight one of the opening acts, the amazing Kelly Rowland, and her 2011 hit, “Motivation.”
Rowland experimented with a few sounds for the lead single for the third album, “Here I Am,” before linking up with writers Rico Love and Jim Jonsion for the sultry slow jam “Motivation”. The record simmers with confidence, desire, and control. It perfectly blends hypnotic rhythm and whispered temptation, creating a feeling that is both private and universal—like a secret shared between lovers at 2 a.m.
The production is sleek yet minimal, featuring a slow, pulsing beat wrapped in warm synths and echoing keys. Each note is stretched just long enough to feel dangerous, with no clutter present. Every drum tap and breathy harmony is placed with precision, allowing Kelly’s voice to take center stage. She effortlessly moves between softness and authority, her tone oscillating between invitation and command, embodying the balance of surrender and dominance that defines the best kind of intimacy.
Lyrically, “Motivation” is pure seduction in song form. Kelly doesn’t ask; she commands. “Go longer, you can last more rounds,” she purrs, setting the tone for a night filled with endurance and passion. Lil Wayne joins in midway, delivering clever metaphors that flirt more than they flex, providing a male counterpoint without disrupting the song’s feminine energy.
What makes “Motivation” timeless is how it feels—not just sexy but empowering. This is a woman entirely in control of her pleasure and presence. A decade later, the track still resonates: smooth, sensual, and saturated with confidence. Whether you’re lighting candles or simply enjoying some alone time, “Motivation” remains the kind of record that dims the lights and elevates the mood fourteen years later.
