“Your Friends & Neighbors” explores the dark side of trying to keep up with Joneses

Jon Hamm adds another series to his impressive resume with “Your Friends and Neighbors” on Apple TV+. Hamm is also one of the show’s executive producers, which Jonathan Tropper created.

After being fired in disgrace and still dealing with a messy divorce from his wife Mel (Amanda Peet), who cheated on him with his former best friend Nick Brandes (Mark Tallman), hedge fund manager Andrew Cooper (Hamm) resorts to stealing from his neighbors’ homes in the affluent Westmont Village, only to discover that the secrets hidden behind the wealthy facades might be more dangerous.

“Your Friends and Neighbors” starts with a solid backstory for Hamm’s lead character, Coop, showcasing how he started at the bottom and went to the top. From the outside, it seems that Coop is still doing well. However, a liaison with a younger employee causes the domino effect that sets up the reason for his thievery.

Potential show viewers should understand that it takes time to delve into the crime aspect, which seems intentional in encouraging viewers to resonate with Coop’s character. Through engaging voiceovers, Hamm conveys that his character is trapped in a “gilded cage.” This phrase evokes the image of a life filled with luxury and privilege, yet also suggests a lack of freedom and authenticity, as it implies being confined.

Once Coop does start burglarizing his neighbors, the show picks up steam, and the supporting cast that includes housekeeper Elena Benavides (Aimee Carrero) as his partner, his lawyer Barney (Hoon Lee), and love interest Sam (Oliva Munn), the show picks up as they all deliver solid performances.

Amanda Peet also gets a solid, meaty role as Coop’s ex-wife. The arc of her character isn’t a mandingo fantasy with retired NBA player Nick but more of a “wealth can feel like chains” as she is trapped and tethered to a lifestyle that is ultimately not one’s own. That said, Mark Tallman is as miscast as Nick and comes across as lame with his cheerios.

Nevertheless, while screening seven episodes for review, it’s clear the show is all about Jon Hamm, as he delivers another rock-solid performance. I look forward to the second season, which was given the green light before it premiered.

Final Grade: B+

The first two episodes of “Your Friends & Neighbors” will arrive on Apple TV+ this Friday, April 11th. The remaining seven episodes will air every Friday until May 30th.

“The Gray House” Review: Civil War Spy Drama Reveals the Women Who Saved the Union

Civil War dramas often measure valor through cannon fire and cavalry charges. However, “The Gray House*“valuates valor through coded messages, calculated risks, and the steady nerves of women who understood that information could be deadlier than any rifle. This eight-episode limited series reframes the conflict not from the battlefield, but from the drawing rooms of Richmond, where loyalty is performed, and survival depends on silence.

“In the Blink of an Eye” Review: Ambition Without Cohesion

It’s been a month since I finished my first run at Sundance, and I’m finally getting the chance to see some of the films I missed as they began to premiere. One of those films is “In the Blink of an Eye,” which is available on Hulu. The film is directed by Andrew Stanton and written by Colby Day.
