Tessa Thompson and Jon Bernthal Ignite Netflix’s Twisty “His & Hers”

Netflix’s new psychological thriller, “His & Hers”, immerses us in the oppressive heat of Georgia, where former news anchor Anna (Tessa Thompson) has retreated into near-total isolation in Atlanta, allowing her career and friendships to deteriorate.  However, a report of a murder in the sleepy town of Dahlonega—where she grew up—snaps her back to reality.

Determined to return to her reporting days, Anna begins digging for answers.  Local detective Jack Harper (Jon Bernthal) is suspicious of her involvement and pulls her right into the crosshairs of his investigation.  As the tagline states: there are two sides to every story—his and hers—which means one of them is always lying.

I’ll admit upfront that I hadn’t heard of author Alice Feeney before this six-episode adaptation of her novel came out.  Consider me converted.  Co-showrunners William Oldroyd, who directs, and Dee Johnson, along with writer and executive producer Bill Dubuque, transform Feeney’s intricate material into a gripping binge-watch that rarely lets up.

Tessa Thompson delivers a riveting performance as Anna—fragile one moment, fiercely determined the next, and with a haunted quality that keeps viewers guessing about her hidden secrets.  Jon Bernthal infuses his character, Harper, with trademark intensity—exuding tension and quiet menace—making their charged confrontations the electrifying core of the series.

The supporting cast—Pablo Schreiber, Crystal Fox, Sunita Mani, Rebecca Rittenhouse, Marin Ireland, Poppy Liu—delivers sharp, memorable performances that increase the paranoia without making them feel like obvious suspects.  Oldroyd creates a moody, atmospheric visual style, utilizing the humid Southern setting to enhance the tension.

The editing is crisp, and the pacing is relentless; each episode concludes with a hook that compels you to keep watching.  The executive producers—Thompson, Oldroyd, Johnson, Dubuque, Kristen Campo, Jessica Chastain, Kelly Carmichael, and Kishori Rajan—have assembled a polished and confident production that knows precisely how to execute its reveals.

“His & Hers” may not break new ground in the domestic thriller genre, but it skillfully executes the formula with style, smarts, and two powerhouse leads at the top of their game.  In a streaming landscape filled with half-baked mysteries, this series stands out as refreshingly complete and satisfying.

It’s perfect for a weekend binge.  Clear your schedule!

The Bride! Review: Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale Ignite a Wild Gothic Love Story

There are two ways to revisit a classic monster story: you can polish the myth and present it like a museum exhibit, or you can crack it open, electrify it, and see what kind of creature comes back to life. With “THE BRIDE!”, from Warner Bros. writer and director Maggie Gyllenhaal clearly chooses the second approach, transforming the familiar Frankenstein legend into something feral, emotional, and wildly unpredictable.

Sundance Review : “If I Go Will They Miss Me”

It’s been about three weeks since I returned from Sundance’s final year in Park City — a closing chapter for a festival that has defined independent film for decades. As expected, I missed a few titles in theaters but caught up with them at home. One such film was “If I Go Will They Miss Me”.
