Slow Jam Saturday: Raheem DeVaughn, “Mo, Better”

Today, my wife and I celebrate seventeen years of wedded bliss. I wanted to highlight the song I almost chose for this week’s Slow Jam Saturday for our first dance. My wife is an uber fan of Ne-Yo, and I’m a huge New Edition fan, but we couldn’t compromise. So, in the end, we decided to go with “Give My All To You” from Myron.

However, when we heard the album track “Mo’ Better” from Raheem DeVaughn’s second album, “Love Behind the Melody,” it almost won out. The reason we decided not to go with it was the length. The message is so strong in the song that there’s not anywhere in the song worth pausing.

Produced by Jack Splash, who also co-wrote the composition with DeVaughn, “Mo’ Better” is a poignant tribute to someone who provides love, support, and positivity in Raheem’s life. The lyrics express profound gratitude for this person’s unwavering support and capacity to alleviate pain and hardship.

Throughout the track, Raheem emphasizes that material possessions are insignificant compared to the value derived from this individual’s companionship. He expresses, with sincerity, that she holds the titles of first lady and queen, which signifies a deep respect and honor for her role in his life. The bond between the two is depicted as immediate and undeniable, with Raheem acknowledging that they recognized their potential for love from the first moment they encountered one another.

The chorus underscores the transformative influence of this individual’s presence. In the face of life’s challenges and uncertainties, she enhances every aspect of Raheem’s life. Her presence brings joy, hope, and optimism, enriching his experience. The phrase “I know your love gets better, better with time” conveys that their love continues to evolve and strengthen as time progresses.

The bridge illustrates the various ways in which this person positively influences Raheem’s daily existence. Whether providing comfort and reassurance during challenging times or offering physical solace, her presence consistently enhances his well-being. Specific moments, such as waking up together or finding comfort in each other’s embrace, further highlight the significance of their relationship.

“Mo’ Better” celebrates the transformative capacity of love and the substantial impact a significant individual can have on one’s life. It embodies the joy and gratitude associated with having a person who brightens each day, thereby reminding listeners of the importance of fostering deep connections and valuing those who contribute positivity and love in their lives.

Final Grade: A

Review: “Imperfect Women” Is A Stylish Slow-Burn Anchored by Strong Performances

Apple TV+’s “Imperfect Women”, created by Annie Weisman and directed in part by Lesli Linka Glatter, presents a polished, character-driven mystery that reveals its strengths over time. Centered around the unraveling of a decades-long friendship, the series relies more on emotional depth than on shock value, and this choice largely pays off.
