R&B luminary Usher is commencing his “Past Present Future” tour this week. Notably, two decades ago, he experienced resounding success with “Confessions” and the subsequent “Truth Tour.” For this week’s Slow Jam Saturday segment, I intend to revisit 2005 and spotlight a selection from the “In the Mix” soundtrack, which Usher had a starring role.
The soundtrack was released via his US Record label in collaboration with J Records, showcased renowned R&B figures such as Anthony Hamilton, Chris Brown, and Robin Thicke alongside artists under Usher’s label. Notably, the artists I aim to discuss this week are the vocal ensemble One Chance and their work “That’s My Word.” Hailing from the Windy City, the group comprised the Gordon brothers, Jon and Mike, and their compatriots Rob Brent and Courtney Vantrease.
Usher presented the group with a mid-tempo ballad entitled “That’s My Word” as a platform to introduce them to the music scene. The composition, penned and produced by Mike City, delves into themes of regret, yearning, and the quest for absolution within a romantic context. The group’s poignant performance encapsulates profound remorse for prior transgressions, mainly lies and self-serving conduct that inflicted pain upon their partner.
The group candidly admits to their transgressions and the emotional toll of deceit. Phrases such as “I know it hurts you when I lied to you” underscore their cognizance of the emotional upheaval caused by their actions. Lines such as “making up excuses” and “you could tell that I was lying right to your face” illustrate the narrator’s self-awareness regarding their past lack of sincerity.
The recurring iteration of phrases such as “that’s my word” emphasizes the narrator’s pledge to reform, serving as a metaphor for trust and candor. The composition adeptly captures sentiments of regret and an entreaty for forgiveness while acknowledging self-centeredness in “I thought everything revolved around me,” evoking personal growth and heightening the emotional impact. This evolution underscores the group’s dedication to their craft and audience.
“That’s My Word” effectively communicates love, trust, and accountability complexities. Despite One Chance subsequently releasing the well-received single “Look At Her,” the group’s album was ultimately not released. Nevertheless, “That’s My Word” was a notable introduction to the group.
