Slow Jam Saturday: Heatwave, “Look After Love”

As enthusiasts of the group may be aware, Johnnie Wilder Jr, a founding member and lead vocalist, suffered a debilitating accident in 1979, resulting in paralysis from the neck down. “Current” marked the final Heatwave album to showcase his vocals, following which he pursued a solo career. Notably, Rod Temperton, a fellow band member and primary songwriter, departed from the group after this album, after achieving recognition for his contributions to the music of the King of Pop.

Continuing the group’s tradition of heartfelt ballads, ‘Look After Love’ delves into the profound love and affection experienced in a relationship. Temperton’s lyrics beautifully underscore the power and significance of love and its ability to bring joy and fulfillment, resonating with the listener’s deepest emotions.

Knowing that Wilder was in a wheelchair, crooning lyrics that mention stars filling the singer’s eyes when they are with their partner, indicating the overwhelming joy and excitement they feel in their presence. The mention of words not being enough to express their feelings, only a kiss, suggests that some emotions are so profound that they cannot be adequately conveyed through language alone.

The recurring phrase “let’s look after love” is a mantra for the relationship, symbolizing the need to prioritize and care for their love. It implies a sense of responsibility and dedication to maintaining and preserving the love they For mainstream music fans, if you ask them to name a song from London disco-funk band Heatwave, the go-to answer is more than likely either  “Boogie Nights,” “The Groove Line,” or the iconic ballad “Always and Forever.” So, while I could write a lengthy piece on “Always and Forever” for this week’s Slow Jam Saturday, I wanted to highlight “Look After Love” from the band’s fifth album, 1982’s “Current.”

Academy Award nominee Peter Craig collaborates with fellow nominee Ridley Scott to adapt Dennis Tafoya’s novel Dope Thief for television. Airing on Apple TV, this eight-episode series stars Oscar nominee Brian Tyree Henry in the lead role and also features Wagner Moura, Marin Ireland, Kate Mulgrew, Nesta Cooper, Amir Arison, and Ving Rhames.
