Slow Jam Saturday: Frankie Beverly & Maze, “Family”

The legendary Frankie Beverly of Maze made his transition this past Wednesday. Therefore, showing him some love for this week’s Slow Jam Saturday was only fitting. I went back and forth about what song to pick, but the answer was clear, and I chose “Family.”

Initially appearing on the group’s “Joy And Pain” album, “Family” is one song I was never blessed to hear live the two times I saw him live. The song “Family” by Maze featuring Frankie Beverly is a powerful celebration of unity, love, and the importance of familial bonds. It expresses the joy of togetherness and the powerful connections that define relationships among blood relatives and chosen family members.

The overall message highlights that true happiness stems from these connections and the sense of belonging they provide. As the song progresses, it emphasizes that family extends beyond mere biological ties and includes anyone who brings love and support into our lives, making us all part of a larger, inclusive community.

The lyrics commence with evocative imagery depicting a journey shared “out on the road with my family.” This notion encompasses a physical voyage and symbolizes the emotional highs and lows experienced with loved ones. Phrases such as “spreading the feelings that we feel inside” convey a sense of warmth and positivity derived from mutual understanding and collective experiences. The repeated affirmation, “You are family too,” fosters inclusivity, encouraging listeners to recognize their position within a broader supportive community.

The reference to “the ties that bind us together” is a poignant metaphor for the profound emotional connections that endure through life’s challenges. It underscores an underlying cultural belief that familial love forms the foundation of community, suggesting that these bonds remain resilient against external pressures. Essentially, “Family” encapsulates the principle that happiness and strength spring from unity and connection.

Through its sincere yet accessible lyrics, this song delivers an essential message: whether traditional or chosen, family is crucial in offering love, support, and shared joy. It reminds us of belonging to something greater than ourselves while emphasizing that cultivating these relationships is fundamental to leading a fulfilling life. The celebratory refrain amplifies this sentiment of joy, fostering optimism and interconnectedness among listeners.

Although Frankie may no longer be with us physically, his music will endure forever.
