While Usher was arguably R&B’s king twenty years ago with his fourth album “Confessions,” when it came to the ladies, R&B trio Destiny’s Child made headlines when they released their fifth and, to date final studio album “Destiny Fulfilled.” The album’s first two singles were for the dance floor, and the third single was about empowerment, but for the fourth single, the trio crafted a sensual ballad, “Cater 2 U”, which is this week’s Slow Jam Saturday pick.
The group wrote the song with Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins, Ricky “Ric Rude” Lewis, and Robert Waller. Additionally, Rude and Jerkins handled the song’s production with group member Beyoncé. Keeping with the album’s conceptual theme of a woman’s relationship journey, “Cater 2 U” follows “Solider” on the album.
If “Soldier” sets the stage for a woman’s initial attraction to a man, then “Cater 2 U” takes that dynamic to the next level by exploring the deepening desire for intimacy. In this empowering anthem, Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams express their commitment to being ideal partners by genuinely catering to their significant other’s wants and needs.
The song emphasizes a holistic approach to love, highlighting the importance of not just physical attraction but also the necessity of meeting emotional and spiritual needs. The trio articulates a profound desire to ensure their partners feel cherished, supported, and appreciated through their heartfelt lyrics. They communicate a willingness to go above and beyond, demonstrating that love manifests in small gestures and grand acts of devotion.
Moreover, “Cater 2 U” underscores the significance of reciprocity in relationships. It serves as a reminder that love thrives when both partners are attentive to each other’s desires, creating a nurturing environment where both individuals feel valued. The song encourages a loving and selfless approach, advocating for a partnership built on mutual care and respect, where each person’s happiness is a shared priority. Ultimately, it highlights the beauty of giving and receiving love in a balanced, harmonious relationship.
The ladies all sound lovely on the track, and kudos to Michelle for slaying the bridge. While I was never blessed enough to hear the song live, it remains a staple on my playlist.
Final Grade: B+
“Cater 2 U” is available on all streaming platforms.
