One of my most significant decisions late last year was to pledge to Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. At the time of this writing, I am in Atlantic City for my fraternity’s Regional Conference, where I will represent my chapter, Beta Alpha Omega. In that regard, I believe the perfect song for this week’s Slow Jam Saturday is “The Best Man I Can Be.”
As many already know, the song initially appeared on the classic film “The Best Man” soundtrack and featured Case, Ginuwine, RL of Next, and Tyrese. Written by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, “The Best Man I Can Be” celebrates the power and importance of brotherhood. The lyrics highlight the struggles and challenges faced by individuals, emphasizing the need for support, understanding, and forgiveness from one another.
Case has the first verse acknowledging men’s difficulties, such as feeling alone, dealing with pain, and making mistakes. The chorus poses the question of what a brother can do, suggesting that a brother can be a source of assistance when one is down, a guide when one can’t see clearly, and someone who helps them become the best version of themselves.
Each artist expresses their steadfast commitment to their peers throughout the song while promising mutual support through any errors or obstacles they face. Strong vocal performance highlights how loyalty and unconditional support become vital during challenging moments. The song lyrics explore self-improvement through learning from past errors while encouraging individuals to become better people through their brothers’ support.
When you listen to that song, you’re hearing more than just smooth vocals and harmony — you’re hearing a testament to real brotherhood. That same kind of bond is what we live and breathe in Iota Phi Theta. That’s how it is with my Iota brothers — we walk through the storms together. Whether it’s personal struggle, community work, or supporting one another’s goals, we don’t fold. We stand firm, shoulder to shoulder because that’s what brotherhood demands.
While I haven’t been in the frat for a whole year yet, one thing is for sure: the men of Iota Phi Theta are guiding me to be the best man I can be.

Civil War dramas often measure valor through cannon fire and cavalry charges. However, “The Gray House*“valuates valor through coded messages, calculated risks, and the steady nerves of women who understood that information could be deadlier than any rifle. This eight-episode limited series reframes the conflict not from the battlefield, but from the drawing rooms of Richmond, where loyalty is performed, and survival depends on silence.

It’s been a month since I finished my first run at Sundance, and I’m finally getting the chance to see some of the films I missed as they began to premiere. One of those films is “In the Blink of an Eye,” which is available on Hulu. The film is directed by Andrew Stanton and written by Colby Day.
