Single Review: Musiq Soulchild – Just Friends (Sunny) (DJ Soulchild Remix)

DJ Soulchild, a talented Remix Phenom from Switzerland delivers another remix for 2024 perfect for the dance floor. He added his unique style to Musiq Soulchild’s debut single, “Just Friends,” which was initially released in 2000 as the third single from the “Nutty Professor II: The Klumps (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack).” DJ Soulchild has returned to the City of Brotherly Love to bless his fans with this fantastic new track.

The strength of “Just Friends (Sunny)” was in the message of Musiq’s vocal which paints, a relatable narrative of an individual who has developed deep feelings for a particular lady he’s quietly observed from a comfortable distance. Exemplifying grace and patience, Musiq gently engages her in conversation, politely seeking her name and contact information. With determined consistency, tempered by respect, he is prepared to bide his time and enjoy shared companionship with his love interest.

The melodic verses hint at initial uncertainty on the lady’s part; however, they tellingly merge into accepting his earnest request for quality time together. The underlying thread weaving through “Just Friends (Sunny)” is inspirational and motivational – advocating ‘slow-and-steady,’ cherishing each moment while building upon a sturdy friendship base before advancing towards romantic commitment. This song is an optimistic testament to taking measured steps and patience when navigating the path to potential love.

The remix arrangement of “Just Friends” by DJ Soulchild is notable for its sophisticated atmosphere, which would be ideal for a refined lounge setting where the music is not overpowering. Soulchild’s remix style, as always, imbues the track with a dance-floor-ready rhythm, yet he retains the fundamental melody of the original song. Fans of DJ Soulchild are familiar with his excellent production skills, which complement the song’s original melody. Soulchild’s addition of horns creates an irresistible two-step groove in this remix.

With his remix of “Just Friends,” DJ Soulchild continues to show his love for R&B music while producing the vocalist’s artistry and adding his spin to appeal to a modern-day crowd.

Final Grade: B+
