Second Listen Sunday : Luther Vandross, “This Is Christmas”

R&B legend Luther Vandross had already solidified his place in R&B when he released his first holiday album, “This Is Christmas. Arriving in stores on October 24, 1995, “This Is Christmas” validates Vandross’s ability to sing anything.

Vandross’ velvety voice and festive vibes are evident from the album’s opener, “With A Christmas Heart.” The score is lush, and the arrangement evokes an elegant but homey vibe that draws listeners to the Christmas spirit. His versions of Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas “and My Favorite Things” are also impressive.

Luther Vandross’s interpretations of the previously mentioned tracks are imbued with desire and hope, skillfully merging elements of nostalgia with contemporary influences. Additionally, incorporating songs such as “O Come All Ye Faithful” and “Silver Bells” demonstrates his versatility as an artist and his exceptional ability to rejuvenate well-known music, rendering it fresh and innovative.

As most holiday albums do, it made perfect sense to mix the album with Christmas songs that are both covers and original songs. Vandross personalizes each cover song vocally, rendering it intimate and sincere for a new audience. But as we approach the original tracks, the album stands out. Richard Marx  co-writes the lovely ballad “Every Year Every Christmas.”

Luther Vandross presents an exquisite duet with Darlene Love on the track “I Listen to the Bells,” which is notable for its distinct jazzy atmosphere. The vocal interaction between Vandross and Love is natural and seamless, demonstrating Vandross’s exceptional ability to elicit the finest qualities from established artists such as Love.

But decades later, the real standout album is still “The Mistletoe Jam (Everybody Kiss Somebody),” where Vandross does a fantastic job with the right blend of warmth and grit, grabbing you by the throat and lifting you to the dance floor. His knack for singing happy, loving, and comforting sounds is evident throughout the album, and it’s an excellent choice for holiday dinners or simply enjoying a quiet night by the fireplace.

“This Is Christmas” is not just a Christmas playlist: It’s Luther Vandross’s personal Christmas song, delivered with a particular soul and wit.

Final Grade: B+

Review: “Imperfect Women” Is A Stylish Slow-Burn Anchored by Strong Performances

Apple TV+’s “Imperfect Women”, created by Annie Weisman and directed in part by Lesli Linka Glatter, presents a polished, character-driven mystery that reveals its strengths over time. Centered around the unraveling of a decades-long friendship, the series relies more on emotional depth than on shock value, and this choice largely pays off.
