“Amber Alert” is a solid thriller

Former child stars Hayden Panettiere and Tyler James Williams have collaborated for the first time in the thriller “Amber Alert” from Lionsgate. The film is directed by Kerry Bellessa, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Joshua Oram. This is not the first time the duo has explored this topic; they previously worked on a film with the same title in 2012, using a found footage approach.

The film commences with the introduction of the main protagonists, Jaq (portrayed by Panettiere) and Shane (portrayed by Williams), as they engage in their routine work activities. Their light-hearted banter establishes an amiable tone, drawing the audience into their camaraderie while subtly hinting at the characters’ deeper dimensions. However, the narrative swiftly takes a turn as they begin tailing a vehicle matching the description of an abductor, transforming their ordinary day into a high-stakes pursuit.

The pacing of “Amber Alert” is unrelenting as Jaq and Shane navigate the city streets in pursuit of the car, steadily amplifying the tension with each twist and turn. Cinematographer Lisa Tran adeptly captures the frenetic energy through close-up shots and dynamic camera angles, effectively conveying the urgency of the pursuit. The juxtaposition of everyday tranquility against the chilling reality of abduction underpins the film’s thematic complexity, serving as a poignant reminder of the unpredictability concealed within mundane routines.

Panettiere delivers an emotionally charged performance as Jaq, embodying a fiercely relatable protective instinct. Her transition from a carefree rideshare driver to a resolute hero is captivating, fostering audience support at every stage. Williams complements her portrayal with a blend of wit and intensity, embodying Shane as a supportive companion and an indispensable ally in the perilous pursuit. Their on-screen chemistry introduces levity to the tension-laden narrative, humanizing the dire circumstances they confront.

The screenplay adeptly intertwines suspense with moments of humor, showcasing the protagonists’ resourcefulness and quick-wittedness in unforeseen circumstances. While the plot maintains a sense of urgency, it subtly underscores thesignificance of community and the extraordinary measures ordinary individuals may take to safeguard one another.

Despite the film’s brisk pace, it occasionally falters in its exposition, and the latter half feels somewhat hurried as character backstories and motivations are introduced. Nevertheless, these instances do not significantly diminish the overall viewing experience. Viewers may find themselves breathlessly engaged as the narrative approaches its climax, with its intricate twists heightening the stakes and culminating in a riveting conclusion.

“Amber Alert” effectively exploits contemporary concerns regarding safety and technology, shedding light on the unforeseen role of ordinary citizens as heroes in times of crisis. With its fusion of heart-pounding suspense and relatable characters, the film transcends mere entertainment, offering a pulse-racing odyssey that resonates with contemporary society.

“Amber Alert” is a compelling low-budget movie worth watching in the comfort of your own home.

“The Gray House” Review: Civil War Spy Drama Reveals the Women Who Saved the Union

Civil War dramas often measure valor through cannon fire and cavalry charges. However, “The Gray House*“valuates valor through coded messages, calculated risks, and the steady nerves of women who understood that information could be deadlier than any rifle. This eight-episode limited series reframes the conflict not from the battlefield, but from the drawing rooms of Richmond, where loyalty is performed, and survival depends on silence.

“In the Blink of an Eye” Review: Ambition Without Cohesion

It’s been a month since I finished my first run at Sundance, and I’m finally getting the chance to see some of the films I missed as they began to premiere. One of those films is “In the Blink of an Eye,” which is available on Hulu. The film is directed by Andrew Stanton and written by Colby Day.
