Alex Garland delivers another war in the gripping Civil War

In his highly anticipated fourth film as director, the renowned Alex Garland unveils a captivating journey across a dystopian future America in “Civil War.” As the mastermind behind the film’s script, Garland takes us on a thrilling ride alongside a team of military-embedded journalists. They are racing against time to reach DC before rebel factions descend upon the White House.

The diverse team of journalists, led by the determined Lee (played by the talented Kirsten Dunst), the resourceful Joel (portrayed by Wagner Moura), the seasoned veteran Sammy (brought to life by Stephen Henderson), and the enthusiastic newcomer Jessie (played by Cailee Spaeny), is a testament to the human spirit. Their courage in the face of danger is genuinely inspiring. Each journalist is driven by the desire to secure the exclusive scoop – the last interview with a nameless president (portrayed by Nick Offerman) who is slated for execution after serving three terms.

“Civil War” is not simply an action-packed film or a political tirade about right and wrong. It does not take a stance on whether the President is left or right, but it is evident that the nation, which is supposed to be free, is in chaos and disarray. However, this group’s journey is filled with challenges. They must maneuver through barricades, dodge convoys, and withstand numerous intense firefights. Garland’s focus is not on the political intricacies of the war but on delving into the human experiences of the reporters involved.

Subtly, Garland communicates that in times of conflict, everyone bears losses. To bring this theme to life, the director has meticulously selected an outstanding cast featuring Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny, Stephen McKinley Henderson, and Wagner Moura, who deliver impeccable portrayals of the reporters. Driven by danger and adrenaline, they tirelessly chase that elusive scoop to etch their names in history. While capturing events through photography from a distance—without interfering or offering help—the portrayal remains detached yet profoundly impactful.

Moreover, Garland maintains an observational stance without passing judgment, resulting in raw and confronting scenes that resonate deeply. The cinematography is nothing short of breathtaking and is complemented by intriguingly unconventional music, a blend of electronic and orchestral elements, yet perfectly timed to evoke the intended emotional response. Silence is also masterfully employed to underscore the inherent horror of such situations, adding depth to the storytelling.

While the film is light on the action, I can assure viewers that the scene from the trailers involving a nameless patriot portrayed by Jesse Plemons is downright chilling and worth the price of admission alone. “Civil War, at its essence, is a film that critiques war and challenges notions of exceptionalism by exploring the imperative of conveying the unvarnished truth about conflict.” This intellectual stimulation is a vital aspect of the film’s appeal.

Slow Jam Saturday: Michael Jackson, “Loving You

Fifteen years after his untimely passing, the King of Pop’s music continues to resonate with us, a testament to its timeless appeal. As we honor his heavenly birthday this past Thursday, I wanted to pay tribute to him with ‘Loving You’ for this week’s Slow Jam Saturday.

Second Listen Sunday : Sisqó, Genesis

When we reminisce about the potential of lead singers who could have been iconic solo acts, the name Sisqó immediately springs to mind. The front man for R&B quartet Dru Hill, Sisqó, stormed onto the scene in 1999 with his solo debut ‘Unleash the Dragon.’ The success of the singles ‘Incomplete’ and ‘Thong Song’ propelled Sisqó’s solo debut to sell a staggering five million copies in the US alone, leaving an indelible mark on the music industry.
