Album Review : Ruben Studdard, “My Favorite Holiday”

As the 2024 holiday season approaches, music lovers can expect holiday-themed releases from some of their favorite singers. One of the first to arrive is from “American Idol” Season 2 winner Ruben Studdard. Titled “My Favorite Holiday,” the five-song EP features Christmas standards and an original song.

The lead single, “My Favorite Holiday,” confidently kicks off the project. Crafted by Ruben Studdard, Romel Gibson, and John Jackson—who also serves as the producer—the song highlights Studdard’s deep affection for December 25th. His voice remains impeccable, and he decisively steers clear of corny lyrics or pandering to a younger audience.

The remainder of the EP features covers and Christmas standards, including ” Silent Night,” “Away In A Manger,” and  Stevie Wonder’s “One Little Christmas Tree .” Studdard effortlessly sings all of the tracks and quickly reminds listeners why he won the second season of Idol. However, the EP’s crown jewel is Studdard’s version of the iconic Luther Vandross’s “At Christmas Time.”

In the song, Studdard joyfully celebrates the happiness and warmth of the holiday season. He reflects on themes of love, joy, and togetherness. Forty-eight years later, the song’s core message continues to encourage listeners to embrace the spirit of Christmas, not just during the festive season but throughout the year. By focusing on community and sharing joy, Studdard captures what makes Christmas special—a time for connection and goodwill.

One thing I commend Studdard on is his song selection. He wisely avoids putting his foot in Christmas R&B classics like “This Christmas” by Donny Hathaway or The Temptations’ version of “Silent Night .”However, I would’ve loved to hear him put his spin on Alexander O’Neal’s “My Gift To You” and “Thank You For A Good Year.”

Nevertheless, the EP is harmless as a one-time listen, and Studdard’s voice is fine.
