The third episode of the engaging Disney + series What If arrives today and explores the issues of what would happen if The Avengers didn’t exist. Carrying the subtitle of What If…Earth Lost It’s Mightiest Heroes, the third episode opens with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Black Widow (Lake Bell) visiting drunk Tony Stark/Iron Man (Mick Wingert). Die-hard fans will instantly recognize that the latest entry in the series appears to be retelling Iron Man 2.
However, as The Watcher (Jeffrey Wright) soon reminds us, things aren’t always what they seem. Just as Nick Fury attempts to recruit Tony Stark into the Avengers Initiative at a familiar donut shop, he drops dead after Black Widow injects him with the serum that will allow him to fight his illness.
The Watcher then explains that, while the events of Fury’s Big Week were the catalyst that would form the Avengers, the reality “What If… The World Lost Its Mightiest Heroes” explores takes a different turn. I want to keep this short, as like the first two What If episodes, it’s best to go in blind. I will say that the angle used for this episode is much fun. Furthermore, I enjoyed hearing the voice work by actors returning to their iconic roles.
