I’ve always been a fan of Eric Bellinger. My admiration stems not only from the records he has released under his own name but also from the impressive career he built behind the scenes. Long before casual R&B listeners recognized his face, they were already familiar with his songwriting through tracks he penned for artists like Chris Brown, Usher, Justin Bieber, and Wale.
My appreciation for him deepened after witnessing his performance on the recent “R&B” tour. Watching him serve as both an intermission act and supporting vocalist reminded me of his versatility and how easily his own catalog can be overlooked.
After the show, I decided to revisit his 2021 EP, “New Light: Acoustics”. This four-song project features stripped-down versions of selections from *New Light*, an album Bellinger described as his first proper R&B project. The acoustic renditions of “What About Us,” “Tired of Waiting,” “Go Get It,” and “Euphoric” minimize the original production, allowing the focus to shift to his songwriting, vocal phrasing, and emotional control.
“Tired of Waiting” immediately benefits from this change. What once felt like a polished contemporary R&B track transforms into a more intimate conversation between two individuals uncertain about their relationship. “Euphoric” retains its sensuality, but the lighter arrangement makes the melody feel warmer and more personal.
The song “What About Us” exemplifies why the acoustic treatment is effective. Its emotional foundation is strong enough to endure without elaborate production, while “Go Get It” maintains its encouraging message without veering into sentimentality.
What stood out most during this revisit was Bellinger’s restraint. He never uses the acoustic setting as an excuse to oversing. Instead, he trusts the lyrics and gives the songs space to breathe. This confidence marks an artist who understands that vocal power is not solely about hitting as many notes as possible in a performance.
The original *New Light* earned a Grammy nomination for Best Progressive R&B Album, but *New Light: Acoustics* offers an even clearer insight into Bellinger’s artistry. The EP is brief, focused, and free of unnecessary embellishments.
Seeing him perform this summer led me back to this project, with the expectation of a pleasant revisit. Instead, I was reminded of the importance of acoustic releases. They do more than strip away production; in the right hands, they unveil the strength of the songs beneath.
