Jon Hamm reunites with creator Jonathan Tropper for the second season of Apple TV+’s “Your Friends and Neighbors.” Instead of doubling down on crime, this season broadens its focus—shifting from escalation to examination.
Picking up after Coop (Jon Hamm) narrowly avoids prison, the season finds him still navigating moral gray areas, even after realizing that Sam (Olivia Munn) framed him for murder. His relationship with ex-wife Mel (Amanda Peet) remains complicated—emotionally unresolved yet intentionally restrained. The show avoids easy resets, allowing its characters to grapple with the discomfort they’ve created.
What stands out this time is the change in emphasis. While Hamm remains the anchor, season two truly belongs to the ensemble cast. Peet delivers one of the show’s strongest arcs as Mel confronts aging and menopause with a level of honesty rarely portrayed for women onscreen. The writing avoids cheap laughs, instead grounding her journey in vulnerability and control, culminating in a late-season moment that reclaiming sexuality unapologetically.
Meanwhile, the series continues to explore themes of class and perception through Sam, whose fall from grace highlights how quickly privilege can become conditional. In this world, status does not erase consequences; it merely delays them.
The standout this season is James Marsden as Owen Ashe. Marsden fully embraces the role, delivering a performance that is both charming and arrogant, effortlessly stealing every scene he appears in. It’s a reminder that he has fully settled into a compelling second act as a character-driven scene-stealer.
Not everything works perfectly. Coop’s children remain underdeveloped, and some returning characters still feel more functional than fully realized. However, the broader scope and stronger character development indicate that the series is evolving rather than stagnating.
With a third season already on the horizon, it’s clear the creative team is playing the long game—and for now, it’s definitely worth investing in.
