Season 4 of “The Lincoln Lawyer” delivers twists, depth, and a compelling case

Manuel Garcia-Rulfo reprises his role as the skilled attorney Mickey Haller in the fourth season of “The Lincoln Lawyer” on Netflix.  This series, adapted from Michael Connelly’s novels, was brought to television by David E. Kelley and developed by Ted Humphrey.  The premise follows Mickey Haller, a defense attorney in Los Angeles, who is known for working from a chauffeur-driven Lincoln Navigator.  This season’s case is based on “The Law of Innocence,” the sixth book in the series.

Season 4 also sees the return of Mickey’s team, which includes new lawyer and office manager Lorna (Becki Newton), her husband and Mickey’s muscle Cisco (Angus Sampson), his driver Izzy (Jazz Raycole), his mentor David (Elliot Gould), ex-wife Maggie (Neve Campbell), and daughter Hayley (Krista Warner).  Unfortunately, one of my favorite characters, Mickey’s frenemy and fellow lawyer Andrea (Yaya DaCosta), did not return.

New cast additions include headstrong lawyer Dana Berg (Constance Zimmer), FBI Agent Dawn Ruth (Sasha Alexander), and no-nonsense Judge Stone (Scott Lawrence), along with clients Carter Gates (Javon Johnson) and Jeanine Ferringo (Emmanuelle Chriqui).  When we last left Mickey Haller, he had just scored another victory but was pulled over by the cops and arrested for murder after the body of former client Sam Scales was found in his trunk.

With the numerous twists in this season, I want to keep my review as spoiler-free as possible.  However, one thing I will mention is that, as fans of the book series know, author Michael Connelly’s other character, Bosch, appears in the books as Mickey’s brother, but, for legal reasons, he does not appear in the show.

Instead, the creative team crafts a compelling ten-episode arc that includes callbacks to previous seasons and effectively showcases Mickey Haller’s strength as a lawyer and everyman.  Manuel Garcia-Rulfo continues to excel as our lead, impressing both in and out of the courtroom.  This season’s strength lies in the depth it gives Mickey, whether he’s in jail or interacting with his circle.

Constance Zimmer transforms her character into one you love to hate, proving to be a worthy opponent for Mickey.  The returning cast also has substantial subplots that will keep viewers engaged.  Furthermore, it’s always great to see character actor Scott Lawrence on screen, as well as Becki Newton, who shines as Lorna and comes into her own as a lawyer.

Season 4 of “The Lincoln Lawyer” is a brisk binge, and I can’t wait for Season 5.

Final Grade: B+

“Feed” Movie Review: Irish Vampire Folklore Can’t Fully Sink Its Teeth In

Saban Films “Feed “has the makings of a horror film that could leave a mark, but it too often rushes past the very ideas that make it interesting. Writer-director Marco Van Belle combines grief with Irish vampire folklore, creating a monster whose most frightening weapon is not simply bloodlust but the possibility of giving a grieving woman exactly what she wants. That is a terrific foundation. The film just does not dig deeply enough into it.

Pure Scum Review: Privilege Runs Wild Through the Streets of Melbourne

Since the release of “A Clockwork Orange,” directors have attempted to capture the essence of reckless youth and toxic masculinity without making the characters engaging or appealing. Writer-director Gideon Aroni takes on this challenge in “Pure Scum,” a gritty Australian psychological thriller that follows two privileged young men through an increasingly disastrous night in Melbourne.
