Slow Jam Saturday : Keith Martin, Never Find Someone Like You

As the weather warms up, I wanted to take a trip back to 1995 for this week’s Slow Jam Saturday and pay tribute to the late Keith Martin and his elegant ballad “Never Find Someone Like You.” The song initially appeared on the spring box office hit “Bad Boys” soundtrack and was written by Danny Sembello and Marty Sharron.

Additionally, Martin produced the track with the writers and Inerjie Barrett. A lush ballad, “Never Find Someone Like You,” is a heartfelt declaration of love and longing for a past relationship. Sembello and Sharron’s lyrics express Keith’s deep affection for his lady love, emphasizing their unique connection and inability to find someone like them.

In the verses, Keith reflects on the pain of losing his and the regret of not fully appreciating them during their time together. Keith acknowledges his past mistakes and the heartbreak he caused, expressing a desperate plea for a second chance.

The chorus reinforces the notion that the love he had with his woman is irreplaceable. With bravado, Keith croons that he will never find someone who compares to their ex, affirming the depth and authenticity of their feelings. The use of repetition in the chorus emphasizes the emotional weight of this sentiment.

The second verse delves deeper into Keith’s emotional vulnerability. He confesses his fear of fully committing to love again, perhaps as a result of the pain they experienced from losing his ex. However, despite his reservations, Keith admits to being unable to resist the strong pull towards his ex, making it clear that they still long for their love and companionship.

It’s not a nineties ballad without the bridge, and Keith takes it home, highlighting his mistakes and commitment to his ex. Keith expresses his willingness not to disappoint or let her down again, indicating a desire for a fresh start and the opportunity to build a lasting and fulfilling relationship.

“Never Find Someone Like You” is a heartfelt tribute to a lost love, expressing regret, longing, and the desire for a second chance. While Martin wouldn’t necessarily become the next big thing in R&B, he was far from a one-hit wonder. He would become an in-demand producer and release six more albums in the Philippines.

Final Grade: B+
