Slow Jam Saturday : Dwele, “Weekend Love”

For this weekend’s Slow Jam Saturday, I wanted to take a trip to Motor City and show some love to soul singer Dwele. It was 2005, and I was living in the UK as part of my Air Force enlistment. Dwele had just released his second album, “Some Kinda,” enjoying some chart success with the lead single “I Think I Love U,” by Mike City.

However, in the middle of the album, a slice of seventies soul titled “Weekend Love” still holds up twenty years later. Written and produced by Dweles, the song expresses the desire for a short yet passionate connection with someone, which becomes especially strong during the weekend when people feel free to escape reality.

The opening verse lyrically illustrates how the singer experiences surprise and anticipation when they sees their special person while visiting town. The reference to “special parted memory” evokes a blend of sweet and sad nostalgia for the shared experiences with this person, demonstrating an enduring emotional bond. The lyric “When no one was around and it’s just me, you serve a special parted memory” expresses how intimate and personally meaningful the shared memories with this person are.

The song’s chorus communicates a wishful desire to spend time together for the weekend, combining feelings of longing and admiration towards the mentioned individual. The song uses imagery of green tea discussions and treasured shared moments to demonstrate its deep emotional connection and intimate portrayal. The repeated line, “You’re still fine, let’s chill for the weekend,” highlights the importance of making the most of time together while recognizing how temporary these moments with a loved one can be.
