Slow Jam Saturday : A Few Good Men, “Merry Christmas My Dear”

As we continue counting the days until Christmas 2024 for this week’s Slow Jam Saturday pick, I wanted to highlight another forgotten R&B group, A Few Good Men, and their song “Merry Christmas My Dear.” The track initially appeared on the 1993 compilation “A LaFace Family Christmas,” which showcased the label’s talents in a festive holiday mood.

Vocal quartet A Few Good Man contributed two songs to the project: a cover of  “Silver Bells” and the ballad “Merry Christmas My Dear,” both of which were produced by Daryl Simmons. Demail Burks, David Morris, Aaron Hilliard, and Tony Amey were the members of the group, and after introducing themselves in the festive video for “Silver Bells,” it was only fitting that they delivered a ballad on the album.

Simmons starts the production with a Christmas flair before taking it into a nineties R&B direction. The group begins by crooning and evoking a heartfelt sentiment, blending themes of love, nostalgia, and the holiday spirit. The lyrics reflect a deep emotional connection between the group and a loved one they’ve lost.

The song beautifully juxtaposes the festive atmosphere of the holiday season with poignant personal memories and emotions, creating a bittersweet tone that resonates deeply with listeners. It conveys a heartfelt longing for moments shared with loved ones in the past, which highlights the significance of togetherness during this particular time of year. The repeated wish for a Merry Christmas underscores a longing for happiness, love, and connection, making the song a moving tribute to the joys and the complexities of relationships.

“Merry Christmas My Dear” encapsulates the essence of 90s R&B Christmas music, portraying it as a period of thoughtful reflection, sincere appreciation, and hope for a brighter future, even amid heartache from losing a significant partner. While “A Few Good Men” may only be remembered by dedicated R&B enthusiasts, “Merry Christmas My Dear” is a hidden gem that deserves attention from anyone passionate about holiday music.

Final Grade: B+

“Merry Christmas My Dear” is available on all streaming platforms.

“The Gray House” Review: Civil War Spy Drama Reveals the Women Who Saved the Union

Civil War dramas often measure valor through cannon fire and cavalry charges. However, “The Gray House*“valuates valor through coded messages, calculated risks, and the steady nerves of women who understood that information could be deadlier than any rifle. This eight-episode limited series reframes the conflict not from the battlefield, but from the drawing rooms of Richmond, where loyalty is performed, and survival depends on silence.

“In the Blink of an Eye” Review: Ambition Without Cohesion

It’s been a month since I finished my first run at Sundance, and I’m finally getting the chance to see some of the films I missed as they began to premiere. One of those films is “In the Blink of an Eye,” which is available on Hulu. The film is directed by Andrew Stanton and written by Colby Day.
