Following his successful “In The Heights” adaptation, director Jon M. Chu applies his considerable skills to another cherished Broadway production, “Wicked,” for Universal Pictures. Winnie Holzman, who also authored the original Broadway book, wrote the screenplay for this adaptation. The film is based on Gregory Maguire’s novel, which shares the same title.
“Wicked” presents the untold narrative of the witches of Oz, specifically Elphaba (portrayed by Cynthia) and Glinda (portrayed by Ariana Grande), who encounter one another at Shiz University in the enchanting Land of Oz. Elphaba, who possesses distinctive green skin, faces misunderstanding from those around her and has yet to realize her true potential. In contrast, Glinda is a figure of fame and vanity, shaped by privilege and ambition, yet she has not discovered her genuine self.
Over time, the two women develop an unlikely but profound friendship. However, their relationship reaches a critical juncture following an encounter with the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, leading their lives to diverge significantly. Glinda’s relentless pursuit of popularity ultimately entices her toward the allure of power. Elphaba’s commitment to authenticity and loyalty to those she cares about results in unforeseen and dramatic consequences for her future. Their remarkable journeys through Oz culminate in the fulfillment of their destinies as Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.
The primary supporting cast includes Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, the esteemed headmistress of Shiz University; Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, a charming and carefree prince; Ethan Slater as Boq, an altruistic Munchkin student; Marissa Bode as Nessarose, Elphaba’s beloved sister; and Jeff Goldblum as the renowned Wizard of Oz.
Other notable characters in the film include Pfannee (Bowen Young) and ShenShen (Bronwyn James), two scheming companions of Glinda, and Dr. Dillamond, voiced by Peter Dinklage. Additionally, audiences will be introduced to a new character, Miss Coddle, portrayed by Keala Settle, who was specifically created for this film adaptation.
Cynthia Erivo delivers a powerful performance as Elphaba, showcasing her journey from outcast to significant figure confronting identity and societal pressures. Her rendition of “Defying Gravity” highlights her vocal and emotional depth. Ariana Grande excels as Glinda, effectively blending sass and sincerity, and the chemistry between the two creates a dynamic tension that drives the story.
Jeff Goldblum adds humor and depth as the Wizard, while Michelle Yeoh as Brahma enriches the narrative with her strong presence. The film features stunning visuals, vibrant colors, and intricately designed sets that bring L. Frank Baum’s world to life. The special effects during musical numbers enhance the film without overshadowing the characters’ emotions.
The screenplay, adapted by Winnie Holzman, retains the clever wit and social commentary “Wicked” is known for, exploring themes of friendship, love, and the consequences of choices while addressing prejudice and power. However, it simplifies some narrative arcs that die-hard fans might miss. Furthermore, while “Wicked” is a visual and musical spectacle, it has minor flaws, such as pacing issues in the second act and rushed musical numbers that lack emotional depth.
Nevertheless, “Wicked” is a triumphant cinematic adaptation that delights new viewers and satisfies longtime fans, capturing the magic of friendship and the complexities of human nature.
