For this week’s Slow Jam Saturday, I wanted to continue giving flowers to Quincy Jones and highlight one of his album tracks, “Everything.” The lush ballad finds Jones working with Tevin Campbell on a track for the first time since Campbell’s debut album. Andy Hill and Antonina Armato wrote ” Everything ” about grief, yearning, and the desire to reconnect with an ex.
The lyrics convey the feelings of someone heartbroken following a breakup. They express a longing to feel loneliness again to reconnect with the happiness they once shared in the relationship. The message is that love, when first experienced, leaves a deep mark on the heart. The pain of separation often brings a strong desire to return to that joyful time spent with a partner.
In the song’s opening verse, Campbell establishes an emotionally charged atmosphere with the line, “What would I give to hold you once again?” This metaphor illustrates the profound emotions associated with physical and emotional intimacy, underscoring the significant value he attributes to the relationship. The repeated inquiry, “What would I give?” followed by the response, “Everything,” accentuates the severity of his loss and the lengths he is willing to go to alleviate his heartache.
Furthermore, expressions such as “ease our pain” and “make up for the time I lost with you” indicate a sincere desire for reconciliation, suggesting the singer’s acknowledgment of his contributions to the heartbreak and his remorse regarding past actions. The references to a “quiet room” and “emptiness” symbolize the isolation experienced in the partner’s absence, effectively evoking feelings of sorrow that resonate with individuals who have encountered heartbreak.
Throughout the song, Campbell croons that the longing to reconnect is palpable, especially with lines questioning the well-being of the former lover: “Are you doing all right? Have you found a life apart from me?” These lyrics reflect a bittersweet awareness that the beloved has moved on, yet the singer is stuck in a cycle of yearning and nostalgia.
The icing on the cake in the song, though, is the background vocal by Eric Dawkins and a lush sax solo by Kirk Whalum, which complement the song perfectly. ” Everything” captures the essence of longing and regret, vividly depicting what it feels like to miss someone dearly. I hope there are more songs like this in Jones’s vault.
