Slow Jam Saturday: Atlantic Starr, Always

R&B band Atlantic Starr is set to return to America’s Legendary Music Hall, The Birchmere in Alexandria, VA, for two concerts on Saturday, September 21st, and Sunday, September 22nd. In light of this, it seems appropriate to feature one of their hallmark songs, notably the iconic love ballad “Always,” for this week’s Slow Jam Saturday.

The second single from the group’s 1987 eighth album, “All in the Name of Love,” “Always,” was penned by David Lewis, Jonathan Lewis, and Wayne Lewis, with David and Wayne also producing. A timeless ballad, the lyrics by the Lewis brothers paint a picture of an enduring and unwavering love that is described as rare and heavenly-sent. The song’s core emphasizes eternal love and the promise of being together forever.

David Lewis delivers the first verse, expressing, “Girl, you are to me all that a woman should be, and I dedicate my life to you, always.” This sentiment resonates with any man who has experienced profound love and holds a genuine admiration and appreciation for their partner, acknowledging them as the epitome of an ideal companion. Barbara Weathers sings the second verse, emphasizing their love’s rarity and unique nature and attributing it to a divine origin. The assurance that the partner will remain the same forever reinforces the theme of everlasting love.

Additionally, the lyric “Ooh, you’re like the sun Chasing all of the rain away When you come around you bring brighter days” metaphorically compares the partner to the sun, representing their ability to bring warmth, brightness, and joy into the singer’s life, dispelling the darkness and gloom. Weathers and Lewis’s voices perfectly complement each other in this duet about dedicating one’s life to one’s beloved, which signifies a deep-seated commitment and unwavering devotion, and it’s easy to see why this song became a wedding staple.

Even after thirty-seven years, ‘Always’ resonates with its audience, capturing the essence of everlasting love and the desire for a lifelong connection with a soulmate. Its enduring popularity is a testament to the timelessness of Atlantic Starr’s music.

Review: “Imperfect Women” Is A Stylish Slow-Burn Anchored by Strong Performances

Apple TV+’s “Imperfect Women”, created by Annie Weisman and directed in part by Lesli Linka Glatter, presents a polished, character-driven mystery that reveals its strengths over time. Centered around the unraveling of a decades-long friendship, the series relies more on emotional depth than on shock value, and this choice largely pays off.
