Music fans in the DMV area are in for a treat as Season 2 American Idol winner Ruben Studdard brings his Masterpiece tour to America’s Legendary Music Hall, The Birchmere, in Alexandria, VA. The concert will take place next Sunday, September 15th, and will promote his eighth studio album, “The Way I Remember It.”
As a longtime fan of Mr. Studdard, I felt it only fitting to highlight his fourth solo album, “Love Is,” for this week’s Second Listen Sunday. The album, which arrived in stores on May 19th, 2009, was led by the single “Together.” Studdard linked up with Taj Jackson (formerly of 3T) and producers Stargate for the track.
The song “Together” is a lush ballad that exemplifies the essence of a Ne-Yo album. It is a poignant expression of commitment and unwavering devotion to a romantic relationship. The lyrics reflect a profound connection and a steadfast aspiration to cultivate a resilient and enduring love. Ruben’s rendition of the song and its organic production exudes a compelling simplicity.
In retrospect, considering the direction R&B was taking at the time, “Together” was the ideal choice for a debut single. It encapsulated a message of resolute commitment, forgiveness, and an unyielding determination to surmount challenges in pursuing a lasting and gratifying love.
“Don’t Make ‘Em Like U No More” was the second single. Written by Getayveus Ealey and Reginald Perry and utilizing Syience’s production talents, it maintains the vibes of the first single. Studdard croons about admiration and appreciation for a romantic partner, celebrating their unique qualities and the irreplaceable nature of their connection.
While the album didn’t receive a third single, there were still plenty of gems on the album. The legendary Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis bring their signature to the piano-driven ballad “Song for Her” and covers of “More Than Words,” “The Long and Winding Road,” “For the Good Times,” and “I Can’t Help It,,” which Studdard quickly makes his own. Studdard also finds time to dabble in the country genre with “My Love Is a Rock” without losing his signature sound.
As R&B fans know, the genre had shifted when this album hit stores, which reflected in the sales for “Love Is.” Ruben’s voice is in pristine condition, and while I’m a ballad person, I would’ve loved to hear at least one up-tempo track, perhaps a cover of Alexander O’Neal’s “All True Man” since he was already working with Jam & Lewis. Nevertheless, “Love Is” is a fine album for fan of the singer.
