I often reflect on my childhood and realize how fortunate I was when it came to music. So, for this week’s Slow Jam Saturday, I wanted to show appreciation for the R&B quintet Troop and their song “Still in Love” from their self-titled 1988 debut album. Compromised of Rodney Benford, John Harreld, Allen McNeil, Steve Russell, and Reggie Warren, Troop burst onto the scene with the bop “Mamacita,” which featured the production and writing skills of their label mates Gerald Levert and Marc Gordon from LeVert. However, I’m a ballad fan, so it was all about “Still in Love.”
Lead singer Steven Russell, who would later become known as a songwriter, showcased his songwriting skills early with “Still in Love”. He co-wrote the song with fellow group member Allen McNeill. Additionally, Tony Haynes and Attala Zane Giles (who also produced the track) contributed to the writing. “Still in Love” explores the enduring nature of young love, likening it to classic couples like Romeo and Juliet or Jack and Jill.
“Still in Love” speaks to a deep connection between two people that withstands the test of time and challenges. It captures a sense of timeless romance and commitment, emphasizing the importance of secrecy and keeping their love alive despite obstacles. The members of Troop were all under twenty-one when “Still In Love” was released, so I’ve always felt that song came from the group’s personal experience of leaving behind that last serious relationship from your high school days and coming into your own as a man but staying true to your first love.
Russell and McNeil co-lead the song, and their vocals convey a sense of passion, nostalgia, and dedication that resonates with listeners, celebrating the enduring power of love and the importance of cherishing those unique relationships. The rest of the group members provided background vocals and harmonies that would later play a part in Troop signature sound when it came to ballads.
Arguably, the group’s cover of “All I Do Is Think of You” is their signature ballad, but “Still In Love” set the stage and remains a heartfelt ode to lasting romance and the beauty of finding a soulmate to share life’s journey.
