Slow Jam Saturday: K. Michelle, Can’t Raise a Man

Michelle, a distinct vocalist in the R&B scene, is currently on tour with other notable R&B artists such as Trey Songz, Jahiem, and Keyshia Cole. This presents a perfect opportunity to revisit her second single, ‘Can’t Raise a Man,’ from her debut studio album ‘Rebellious Soul’ (2014), for this week’s Slow Jam Saturday.

‘Can’t Raise a Man’ was produced by Bridgetown, Troy Taylor, and Ezekiel Lewis and written by Taylor, Lewis, Menardini Timothee, and Najja McDowell. In this song, K. Michelle explores the frustration and realization many of us have experienced: the struggle to change someone resistant to personal growth despite our love and efforts. The song vividly portrays a relationship where K. Michelle grapples with a partner who has not embraced responsibility, respect, or commitment.

In the first verse, the lyrics tell us about a man who struggles with emotional growth and understanding how to genuinely love. His actions are erratic, and he seems to play mind games—clearly reflecting his immaturity. The chorus drives home a heartfelt truth: no matter how much effort the protagonist puts into trying to change him, it’s all in vain because he’s already set in his ways. His behavior is more like that of a boy than a grown man, suggesting that perhaps he wasn’t given the proper guidance before their relationship began.

The second verse dives deeper into this man’s irresponsible actions—like coming home at any night and expecting forgiveness without facing any real consequences. K. Michelle wonders how many tears she’ll shed as she watches their love shift its shape. The chorus echoes again: attempting to transform someone who either can’t or won’t change is an exercise in futility. K. Michelle sings the lyrics with a passion that anyone who has ever dated a man-child can relate to.

While she would find more success with reality TV and is shifting to country music, “Can’t Raise A Man” still resonates ten years after its release.

Final Grade: B+

“Can’t Raise A Man” is available on all streaming platforms.

“The Gray House” Review: Civil War Spy Drama Reveals the Women Who Saved the Union

Civil War dramas often measure valor through cannon fire and cavalry charges. However, “The Gray House*“valuates valor through coded messages, calculated risks, and the steady nerves of women who understood that information could be deadlier than any rifle. This eight-episode limited series reframes the conflict not from the battlefield, but from the drawing rooms of Richmond, where loyalty is performed, and survival depends on silence.

“In the Blink of an Eye” Review: Ambition Without Cohesion

It’s been a month since I finished my first run at Sundance, and I’m finally getting the chance to see some of the films I missed as they began to premiere. One of those films is “In the Blink of an Eye,” which is available on Hulu. The film is directed by Andrew Stanton and written by Colby Day.
