Derrick’s 2020 Oscar Picks

Best Picture

Nominees:

The race for best picture is going to be one of the toughest categories to call, as each of the films nominated was met with merit by audiences and critics alike.  Initially I had this being a battle between Marriage Story and 1917. In recent weeks though, Parasite slowly crept in.  Going off the technical achievements and the historical elements my mom is one 1917.  However Parasite could win an upset.

Best Director

Nominees:

Best Director is another strong race with all five directors worthy of the nomination.   Sam Mendes, Martin Scorsese, and Quentin Tarantino are all returning nominees while Todd Philips and Bong Joon Ho are first-timers.

  • Will Win –Sam Mendes
  • Should Win –Sam Mendes
  • Director Who Deserved a Nomination – Trey Edward Shults for Waves

Best Actor

Nominees:

2020’s Best Actor race is clearly the year of Joaquin Phoenix. After viewing Marriage Story, I thought Adam Driver might perform an upset. However, Phoenix is long overdue for a win.

Best Actress

Nominees:

Similar to Best Actor, this isn’t that strong of a race.  Renée Zellweger became Judy Garland and the Academy loves a film centered on Hollywood.

  • Will Win –Renée Zellweger
  • Should Win –Scarlett Johansson
  • Actress Who Deserved a Nomination – Jodie Turner-Smith for Queen & Slim

Best Supporting Actor

Nominees:

Next to Best Picture, this is the toughest category to call. From the moment we saw a promotional photo of Tom Hanks dressed as Fred Rogers, the assumption was he would win an Oscar.  However, this past summer, Brad Pitt made some serious noise with his performance as stunt man in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Since his breakthrough in 1991, Pitt has yet to receive an acting Oscar, so he’s well overdue.

  • Will Win –Brad Pitt
  • Should Win –Brad Pitt
  • Actors Who Deserved a Nomination –

Sterling K. Brown for Waves, Jamie Foxx, and Rob Morgan for Just Mercy.

Best Supporting Actress

Nominees:

Similar to Best Actress, this category is another no brainer. Portraying a tough as nails lawyer, Dern has no real competition.

  • Will Win –Laura Dern
  • Should Win –Laura Dern
  • An Actress Who Deserved a Nomination – Jennifer Lopez for Hustlers
Movie Clappers

More to explorer

Is It Cake Season 3 Serves Up More Family Fun

Comedian Mikey Day reunites with Netflix for Season 3 of the hit show Is It Cake. Deception is the name of the game for the world’s most talented bakers, who will compete to create hyper-realistic cakes that look exactly like everyday objects – with cash on the line. But are they good enough to deceive a panel of celebrity judges… and you? You’ll be asking yourself, ‘Is it real?’ Or…Is It Cake?”

Second Listen Sunday: Bobby Brown, King Of Stage

The year was 1986, and Bobby Brown, a well-known teen idol, was at a critical juncture in his career. His childhood friends had recently voted him out of their musical group, New Edition. Nonetheless, his label’s CEO, the late Jheryl Busby, apprised Brown that the label was obligated to offer him a solo deal. Consequently, Brown embarked on his debut solo album, “King of Stage,” which we chose as our featured selection for this week’s Second Listen Sunday.

Slow Jam Saturday: Mtume, You, Me & He

Although some may consider R&B band Mtume as one-hit wonders for their classic song “Juicy Fruit,” true music enthusiasts know that the group had already released two albums before that song, along with some fantastic album cuts and 11 other charting songs. Led by James Mtume and featuring the powerful lead vocals of Tawatha Agee, Mtume’s track “You, Me and He” is the perfect choice for this week’s Slow Jam Saturday.
